After the incredible speed with which the Kony 2012 video and campaign hit our school (Did it take just a day or two before students were getting the film into class discussions), it seems that there are a number of interesting issues to look at here. We have been studying historical examples of political choices, manipulation and persuasion of the masses and how we can interpret and understand our sources. If you haven’t seen the video here it is:

I haven’t seen the video so that will be part of my homework this weekend. Because there have been a number of criticisms of either the video or the Kony campaign, we should look at a number of sources to try and figure out what this is all about. There is a growing number of critical commentaries on the film and the campaign. Find a couple of interesting ones below.

Foreign Policy Magazine: Joseph Kony is not in Uganda (and other complicated things)

Visible Children: Kony 2012, viewed critically

Child abductee featured in Kony 2012 defends film's maker against criticism

There are many more but let's read over these commentaries to start a discussion of this subject. Let's plan on doing an Inner Circle/Outer Circle Seminar on this subject during our next class.

Some questions you might ask as you read/ view this material:

  • What role does an appeal to emotion play in the different sources above?

  • Does the fact that the film maker is using manipulation and at times inaccurate information change my response to what is a real issue?

  • What action should we take?

  • How much information do we need before we take action?

  • The action many people are taking is to share the film - thus raising the awareness-but is that enough?

  • Why was the film made in the first place?

  • How do I know other information on this issue is accurate? Try snopes.com

  • Can I find a Ugandan response to this film?

Hey Guys, I found this video that I thought was very interesting because it's from a source in Uganda and brings up some valid arguments. -Lara
